Gravity Retaining Wall FAQs

Gravity Retaining Wall FAQs — When Mass Alone Is Enough

A gravity retaining wall holds back earth using the sheer mass and friction of its own material — large boulders, oversized segmental block, or concrete — without geogrid reinforcement or anchors. Gravity walls work well for shorter walls (typically under 4 feet, sometimes up to 6 feet with proper engineering and ideal soils) and on sites where excavation behind the wall for geogrid is impractical. They are not a shortcut around engineering: gravity walls still require base prep, drainage, proper batter, and soil analysis to perform long-term. Engineered Retaining Walls® designs and builds gravity walls across NC, GA, and TN where they're the right tool for the site. Below are the most common questions about gravity walls.
